Plot Overview
Set in 1920s Chicago during the Jazz Age and Prohibition, the musical is a satirical look at crime, fame, and corruption in the justice system. The story centers on Roxie Hart, a chorus girl who murders her lover, Fred Casely, after he fails to help her achieve stardom. She is arrested and sent to Cook County Jail, where she meets Velma Kelly, a vaudeville performer who killed her husband and sister after discovering their affair.
Both women seek the services of Billy Flynn, a slick and opportunistic criminal defense attorney who specializes in turning guilty clients into media sensations. Roxie initially tries to pin the murder on her husband, Amos Hart, but eventually pays Billy to defend her The two women compet…
